Time to Link the U.S. Electric Grids?

As reported by IEEE Spectrum, the U.S. Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has released a new study highlighting the economic and technical benefits of linking the three regional U.S. power grids to better distribute power resources and make renewable energy more widely available around the country.  Noting that equipment at the connection points is nearing the end of its useful life, the study also endorses replacing old equipment with readily available and affordable high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology.
