IEEE Global Initiative Releases Treatise on Ethically Aligned Design of AI Systems

The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems has launched Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Well-being with Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, First Edition (EAD1e).

Developed through a collaboration of over one thousand global experts from the technical and non-technical realms of business, academia and policy, Ethically Aligned Design is the most comprehensive, crowd-sourced global treatise regarding the Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems available today, and provides a template for guiding principles into practice.

According to Doug Frantz of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD):   “What has been missing, until now, is a clear, practical road map to guide the development of AI’s benefits and address its potential risks. Ethically Aligned Design fills that vital gap. It provides businesses, policy makers and everyday people with the essential tools to understand the stakes and support global standards to maximize the benefits and mitigate the risks. Most of all, the IEEE and its diverse pool of experts have produced a call to action that will enable all of us to do a better job of planning for a future that is just beyond the horizon.”
