OCEANIS Community To Address Ethics of AI and Autonomous Systems

On July 25, IEEE and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) launched an Open Community for Ethics in Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (OCEANIS). The global forum will bring together organizations interested in the development and use of standards as a means to address ethical matters in autonomous and intelligent systems.  Initial membership includes IEEE and nine standards developing organizations from Europe, the Middle East, South America and China.   According to IEEE, “the community addresses a real need and opportunity for broad collaboration between all relevant national and international organizations to develop locally and globally applicable solutions that support technical, business and policy decisions.”   Participants plan to address AI and autonomous system-related ethical and policy challenges through a rules-based and transparent standards-setting process.
